SCP Open Audition Notice for Breathing Corpses
by Laura Wade
Directed by Anna-Siobhan Wilcox
To be performed at The Studio, York Theatre Royal
6th - 16th March 2013
Amy finds yet another corpse in a hotel room. Jim is growing suspicious of the smell coming from one of his storage units. And Kate discovers a female body whilst walking the dog...
Breathing Corpses is a murderous jigsaw puzzle of death, despair and domestic violence.
Set against the backdrop of mundane modern existence, events unfold out of sequence, infused with a rich undertone of the blackest of black humour in the grimmest of circumstances.
Playwright Laura Wade, who grew up in Sheffield, won the Critics' Circle Theatre Award for Most Promising Playwright 2005, the Pearson Playwrights Best Play Award and George Devine Award. Breathing Corpses was also nominated for an Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in an Affiliate Theatre, 2006.
York Settlement Community Players proudly present the first ever production of Breathing Corpses to be staged in York.
Anna-Siobhan (Director) writes: ''One of the many reasons Breathing Corpses was selected for a YSCP production was the superbly crafted script, dripping with observation, wit and grim reality. Also, it’s a perfect play for York Theatre Royal Studio, both in terms of scale and programming, providing challenging material for the experienced community of non-professional actors York has to offer.''
The characters are:
Amy, age 18 - 22: A hotel chambermaid
Jim, age 40 - 60: Manager of a self-storage facility
Elaine, age 40 - 60: Jim’s wife
Kate, age 30 – 40: Runs her own business
Ray/Charlie, age 24 – 30: Ray, an employee at Jim's self-storage site/Charlie, a hotel guest
Ben/Charlie, age 24 – 30: Ben, Kate's live-in boyfriend/Charlie, a hotel guest
Auditions are open to actors of all abilities, with the main focus on performing with integrity rather than previous experience. The audition will consist of a read-through and some duologue work, but there is no need to learn anything or read the play beforehand, as scripts will be provided at the auditions.
